What are Whiskers & Carbon Nanotubes?

Whiskers are slender, high‑purity single crystals grown under controlled conditions. Their near‑perfect structure—free from grain boundaries, dislocations and voids—gives them strength approaching inter‑atomic bonding forces (e.g., SiC whiskers: tensile strength >27 GPa, modulus >500 GPa). This defect‑free nature also leads to exceptional electrical, optical, magnetic, and even superconducting properties.

Carbon‑nanotube fibers are fabricated by spinning or drawing multi‑ or single‑walled nanotubes. Their diameter is typically controllable from 5 to 100 μm or more. While individual nanotubes outperform conventional carbon fibers, the overall mechanical properties of CNT fibers still need improvement due to weak inter‑tube bonding.
